FEATURED HUNTER
CHRISTOPHER CESSNA
Chris Cessna discusses the story behind the 155” whitetail in the photo. “I’ve been in tree stands with helicopters buzzing me, vehicles driving by, dogs interfering, and in almost every case I’ve been able to kill a deer or have had an opportunity to get a deer.  In the case of this photo, the landowner’s black lab followed me out to the tree stand and took a nap at the base of the tree.  I was not at all happy and thought the deer would smell the dog or the dog would bark.  An hour later on my evening hunt, a buck filtered into the milo field.  It took an hour for the buck to come my way.  The deer came within 30 yards of me when I got him.  When I came down from the tree stand, the dog was still curled up at the base of the tree.  When a situation like this arises, I have to remind myself that this will not affect my hunt, and it usually doesn’t.”
Chris has had numerous  Base Camp leases over the years from Kansas to Ohio, which is where he is originally from.  He began hunting in 1975 as a middle schooler hunting rabbits, pheasants, and grouse on a friend’s farm and he’s been hooked ever since.  When he was growing up, deer hunting in Ohio was not what it is today, so they would go to Pennsylvania.  As he explains, “Ohio deer hunting now is phenomenal.  I attribute the change to the Division of Wildlife, which now does a better job of managing the deer population than they did years ago.  I think they recognize that it pays of financially for them.”

Chris has had an interesting career path.  As an attorney in private practice for the last 13 years, he sometimes gets involved in hunting related cases, some with national exposure.  “I’ve won cases in Nebraska, Kansas and Utah where ethical hunters who inadvertently purchased the wrong tag had to forfeit their game.  In one case, I got a B & C deer back for him.”

Chris explains his career path, “I have a degree in Natural Resource Management.  As a child, I saw 2 game wardens helping a hunter track a wounded deer.  I was amazed at all the tricks they knew for finding the deer.  I told Dad that I wanted to be a game warden.  I started out at Ohio State and finished my degree at Colorado State.  I worked as a Federal Park Ranger for the US National Park Service for 10 years.  In my role, I often worked with the US Attorney’s office on drug related cases.  I gained respect for prosecuting attorneys and decided to go back to get my law degree.  After graduating from the University Of Denver College Of Law, I worked for the D.A.’s office before going into private practice as a defense attorney.  The best part of my job is now having time to hunt! “

His most memorable hunt…taking his 2 daughter’s out to hunt when they were 6 and 8 and watching them get their first doe. .. “of course, I had to pull the trigger, but their enthusiasm was priceless”.

Well done, Chris!

GREAT FINDS…
On a recent trip to my Wisconsin lease, a storefront caught my eye while traveling through Madison. Roughing It In Style is a furniture store that captures that rustic lodge feel. Among other things, they build their own pieces from reclaimed barn wood and it is some of the most beautiful furniture I have seen. If you are into leather or wood, give them a look.

FEATURED PROPERTY: #6813

Lincoln County, OK
100 Acres
Max Hunters: 4
$3000

Bow hunter’s dream is how I would describe this 100 acres of brushy CRP, thick timber, hay meadows and wetlands that run along the river.  This place really should hunt great, with all the pinch points, funnels and field edges. I’m sure the deer are really liking all the great bedding areas with plenty of water to drink and keep cool. Saw lots of deer sign the day of inspection and there should be plenty turkeys in the area.

As an added bonus, the waterfowl hunting should be excellent on this property as well.

Less than an hour from Oklahoma City & Tulsa, this will make a neat lease for a small group of guys.

Landowner’s house is on the property and all hunters must be cautious and safe. More Info.

GET TO KNOW

Southern Indiana
Leasing Agent:

Andy Guernsey

Andy Guernsey has lived in Clark County, Indiana his entire life.  Andy has hunted his whole life in the southern Indiana area and knows how to evaluate a property’s hunting potential. He graduated from Ivy-Tech University in 2007 and is currently working for his father’s company, Guernsey Built Homes. He and his wife enjoy spending time in the woods together as much as they can hunting deer, turkey, squirrel, dove, quail, and coyote. He really enjoys taking kids hunting and helping them get their first deer or turkey. Andy killed his first deer with a bow at the age of 11 and his first turkey at 14.

To anyone interested in leasing hunting land in Indiana, this is one of the best kept secrets in hunting. Andy will always give an honest evaluation of each property that he inspects. The deer and turkey numbers are at an all time high, and the quality of the animals is as good or better than most other states. Besides being a great place to hunt, Indiana’s out of state licenses are also much cheaper than many of the surrounding states.
